Realistic Optimism: See the Future Without Denying Problems
Realistic optimism combines hope with an honest reading of the situation. You can see possibilities while still acknowledging barriers.

Realistic optimism is not forcing yourself to stay positive. Realistic optimism in learning means seeing a positive possibility, acknowledging risk, and choosing an action that fits the information you have.
Realistic optimism keeps hope grounded
“I will succeed without problems” sounds optimistic but is difficult to plan with. “I can improve if I practise regularly and ask for feedback” is more realistic because it connects hope to action.
Use three columns: facts, interpretation, next step
- Fact: what actually happened?
- Interpretation: what story am I telling about it?
- Next step: what small action could test that story?
Reframing does not erase the problem
Reframing looks for a fuller view. “I submitted late” remains a fact; a more balanced addition may be “I need to improve time estimates and ask for clarification earlier.”
A two-minute optimism practice
Write one possibility you want to build, one barrier that may appear, and one response you can prepare. This HERO LAB educational material was created by Nirwasita Dharma Cendekia. Use it for reflection, not as a diagnosis or replacement for professional support.
